Objectively Selecting Sites from Each Platform
- BuiltWith was used to identify the top ten ecommerce platforms
- A filter was created to identify active ecommerce websites that spend at least $500 per monthly on each platform. This is the key difference in the original study. This was not done in the original study. It created an unfair comparison. WooCommerce is super affordable compared to Shopify. You are more likely than not to be marketing Shopify if you pay monthly. BigCommerce is the best eCommerce platform. The robust product search engine makes it ideal to support larger retail brands. It is a great choice for those who are looking to open an eCommerce shop or if they already have a brick-and-mortar store and wish to expand their business to include online orders. The tools available make it possible to succeed in any industry or niche.
You can customize your online store without knowing how to code. The customizable templates allow you to create your store and sell your products. This interface is intended for people with no web development skills but allows those who are tech-savvy to modify the HTML and CSS.
I love BigCommerce templates. You will find advanced and buyer-centric templates within the store. However, very few of them are free. There are seven themes available for free, with two variations of each.
There is a wide community of developers and designers available on the fly. You can search the partner directory to find additional experts.
Pricing is very affordable at 29.95 per month. You get some extras like gift cards, checkout codes, unlimited bandwidth, professional reporting, and gift cards. Although you won’t be able to get a custom SSL and abandoned cart saver, it is still very useful for small stores that don’t make more than 50k a year. The sales limit increases as the plan gets more expensive.
Top Pick: Shopify
Shopify has the best-selling platform. You can dropship using Facebook Ads and Instagram marketing. If I was going to depend on SEO, I wouldn’t use Shopify. If I was creating a large online store that sells many products, Shopify would not be the best choice. I’d use BigCommerce instead.
Shopify performs slightly better than BigCommerce in some areas, such as 1-click upsells after a purchase. But I prefer WordPress because it has an affiliate revenue model.
Shopify’s drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to create an online store. It takes only a few minutes to get the hang of website development.
There are too many apps to list.
Shopify POS is also available for brick-and-mortar stores that want to accept payments via the mobile application. It can also be used by complex stores.
They have their downsides, just like everything else. They currently have only 10 free themes. This is not a bad thing. They charge between $100 and $180 for the paid themes.
Their biggest disadvantage is their SEO. Their poor ranking performance is one of my biggest concerns about their SEO.
They have a fixed URL structure that you can’t change. Shopify websites have many unstructured URLs that go beyond the /products/ and /pages/ slug restrictions. Shopify websites have a poor ranking, which I noticed as well during our research. Shopify ranks very low in terms of SEO.
If you don’t use Shopify Payments, they will charge transaction fees. These are not something that anyone likes. Shopify Payments is an excellent option.
Affordable : Wix
Wix eCommerce has come a long way in just a few short years. Wix was not on my 2017 list when I started reviewing eCommerce platforms. After they were added to my list, I gave them an extremely poor rating and wouldn’t recommend them.
Wix has become a major player in the eCommerce market and offers great value to solopreneurs as well as small eCommerce businesses. Wix’s eCommerce features are now much more advanced. They offer dropshipping, multi-channel integration, abandoned cart recovery, and print on demand.
They’ve experienced significant SEO problems in the past. While many of these issues were solved, others such as the extra string that was added to URLs for blog posts or product pages, remain. This is not the best SEO practice, especially for large eCommerce companies.
You might have to change as you grow. The storage space is limited to 20GB. If you use a lot of digital products, or other heavy items, this might not be enough. It is easy to use for beginners. Wix is the best website builder I have used. It offers on-page customer service while you are creating your store.
Drag and drop elements can be used to add videos and functionality and make your website unique. There are over 500 themes, of which 72 are completely free. Except if you used their ADI, your site will be published with the theme you selected at the time.
3dcart (now Shift4Shop), has been serving over 22,000 online businesses, including PCMag clients, since its 2001 release. You get unlimited storage and no transaction charges. Their POS is also available and supports multi-channel selling. The company was renamed Shift4Shop in 2021.
Shift4Shop isn’t as successful as BigCommerce or Shopify, despite being much older. The reason is obvious. This is not the right tool for beginners. The onboarding video is helpful, but the entire operation is difficult to understand.
Although the templates are more industrial-looking, they feel outdated. Because there is no drag-and-drop functionality, it can be difficult to customize the store. There are many developers who will help you with theme design and other modifications.
Their strength lies in shipping. They offer advanced shipping solutions without any API.
Like BigCommerce, Shift4Shop limits the number of sales that you can make on each plan. The lowest plan costs $19 per month and allows you to make 50k.
Overall, the value is excellent. It’s still missing out on the abandoned cart saver core feature. Shopify included it, which was a huge step in the right direction. It still offers more features than Shopify.
Zyro is a low-cost SaaS platform that is targeted at small businesses. Although it is a relatively new product on the market, Hostinger has it. They offer more than a website builder.
